Resume vs CV: What Is the Difference and Which One Should You Send?
By Muhammad Shahid Khan · · 4 min read
Quick answer
In the US and Canada, a resume is a 1 to 2 page summary tailored to one job, and a CV is a longer, complete academic record used for research, academia and medicine. In the UK, Ireland, Europe, the Gulf and South Asia, "CV" is simply the normal word for a resume. When in doubt, send what the advert asks for, in 1 to 2 pages.
| Resume (US) | 1 to 2 pages, tailored to each job |
|---|---|
| CV (US academic) | No length limit, complete record of research, teaching and publications |
| CV (UK/EU/Gulf/South Asia) | Same as a resume: usually 2 pages |
| Rule of thumb | Use the word in the job advert |
"Should I send my CV or my resume?" is one of the most common job-search questions, and the confusing answer is that it depends where you are. The two words mean different things in different countries.

What is a resume?
A resume (sometimes written résumé) is a short, targeted summary of your experience, skills and achievements, written for a specific job. It is usually one page, or two for long careers. You change it for each application so the most relevant parts come first.
What is a CV?
CV stands for curriculum vitae, Latin for "course of life". In its original sense it is a complete record of your academic and professional history: education, research, publications, teaching, conferences, grants and awards. It grows over your career, and is not cut down for each job.
Which term is used where?
| Region | Standard job document | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| United States, Canada | Resume | "CV" means a long academic CV |
| United Kingdom, Ireland | CV | Usually 2 pages. Same as a US resume in practice |
| Europe | CV | Some countries use the Europass CV format |
| Gulf (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar) | CV | Often includes a photo and nationality |
| Pakistan, India, Bangladesh | CV or resume, used interchangeably | "Biodata" is a separate document |
| Australia, New Zealand | Resume or CV, used interchangeably | Often 2 to 3 pages |

Resume vs CV at a glance
| Resume | Academic CV | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 1 to 2 pages | No limit |
| Purpose | Get an interview for one job | Show your complete academic record |
| Tailored? | Yes, for each job | Mostly the same for each application |
| Main content | Achievements, skills, experience | Research, publications, teaching, grants |
| Used for | Most jobs | Academia, research, medicine, some grants |
Which one should I send?
- Follow the job advert. If it says CV, send a CV. If it says resume, send a resume.
- Applying in the US for a non-academic job? Send a 1 to 2 page resume, even if the advert says CV.
- Applying in the UK, Europe, Gulf or South Asia? A "CV" is a 2-page resume. Do not send 8 pages of everything you have done.
- Applying for an academic, research or medical post? Send a full academic CV.
- Asked for a biodata? That is a different document. See biodata format for jobs and marriage.
Can one app make both?
Yes. Resume Builder makes résumés, CVs, cover letters, biodata and resignation letters, unlimited and free. Keep a full master version with everything, then duplicate it and cut it down for each application. Whatever you call it, make sure it passes an ATS check before you send it.
