I build backends that don't fall over

I'm Shahid, a backend developer from Pakistan. For the last five years I've worked on blockchain and Web3 products with real users behind them, including one that raised $185M and grew past 300 million users. Before that I spent two years as an SQA engineer, which is why the things I ship tend to stay shipped.

Products I helped ship, and what actually happened

These are live products, not demos. For the big four I've written down the problem I was handed, what I did about it and what changed afterwards.

Privacy Blockchain Protocol2023 — Present

DOP — Data Ownership Protocol

Backend Developer (Node.js / Web3) · dop.org

DOP is a privacy-focused blockchain protocol that lets users choose exactly what on-chain data they reveal, using zero-knowledge selective disclosure. I engineered the backend services behind it — the APIs, the data layer and the blockchain connectivity that everything else depends on.

The problem

At 300M+ users the read-heavy endpoints started timing out and MongoDB CPU utilization was pinned near its ceiling. Separately, single-provider RPC outages were silently breaking blockchain transactions.

What I did

I profiled the slow queries and rebuilt the access patterns with proper compound indexes plus a Redis caching layer for read-heavy routes. For the chain layer I integrated 5 RPC providers behind randomized selection with automatic failover, so a dead node never reaches the user.

Web3 Ecosystem & Alternative Internet2023 — 2024

Tomi — tomi.com

Solidity & Node.js Developer · tomi.com

Tomi is a DAO-governed Web3 ecosystem building an alternative internet — its own domain layer (.tomi), wallet, browser and TOMI token. I wrote Solidity smart contracts and the Node.js services that connected the on-chain layer to the products people actually use.

The problem

A live token ecosystem with over a million users leaves no room for contract mistakes or backend drift — contract state and the off-chain services had to agree at all times.

What I did

I built and tested the Solidity contracts powering token and ecosystem logic, then wrote Node.js services to index on-chain events, expose them through clean APIs and keep off-chain state in sync with the chain.

Crypto News & Market Data Platform2023 — 2024

TheCryptoBasic

Backend Developer · thecryptobasic.com

TheCryptoBasic is a crypto news and market-data publication serving over two million readers. I developed and maintained the backend — the content APIs, the live market-data pipeline and the authentication layer behind user accounts.

The problem

Users were being logged out at random, which quietly destroyed retention, and market data had to stay fresh for a large concurrent readership without hammering upstream providers.

What I did

I traced the logouts to incorrect JWT expiry and refresh-token handling and rewrote the session flow so tokens refresh cleanly instead of expiring mid-session. On the data side I tuned the fetch and caching strategy so market data stays current under load.

Blockchain Project2023

Rain — rain.one

Backend Developer · rain.one

Rain is a blockchain project I contributed to through its private sale phase — the period where the backend has to be flawless because real money is moving through it.

The problem

A private sale is unforgiving: contribution flows, wallet interactions and transaction records all have to be correct on the first try, under a hard deadline.

What I did

I built and hardened backend services around the sale flow, with careful validation, accurate transaction handling and error reporting so no contribution could be lost or double-counted.

Apps I've shipped

Eight apps on the App Store, with a guide for every one

I build and maintain these iPhone, iPad and Mac apps myself. Each has five practical guides on the blog, in English, Hebrew and Chinese.

Experience

Five years, three companies, a lot of production incidents

I started in QA, which taught me how software breaks. Then I moved to backend, which taught me why. Here is the short version.

Backend Developer (Node.js / Solidity)

Quecko Inc. · Islamabad, Pakistan

CurrentMarch 2023 — Present
  • Currently building Joni (joni.ai) — an AI product platform — as my main ongoing project.
  • Engineered backend services for DOP (Data Ownership Protocol), a privacy-focused blockchain protocol that raised $185M in its private sale and grew to 300M+ users.
  • Fixed slow APIs, DB timeouts and high MongoDB CPU utilization at DOP scale by adding indexes and Redis caching for read-heavy queries.
  • Eliminated RPC node downtime by integrating 5 RPC providers with randomized selection and failover, keeping transactions uninterrupted when individual nodes failed.
  • Built Solidity smart contracts and Node.js services for Tomi (tomi.com), a Web3 ecosystem with 1M+ users — the TOMI token climbed from $0.10 to $7 after launch.
  • Maintained the backend of TheCryptoBasic, a crypto news and market-data platform serving 2M+ users; fixed JWT session bugs causing random logouts.
  • Contributed to Rain (rain.one), a blockchain project that raised $1M in its private sale.
  • Built New-Waffle, an NFT raffle web application, end-to-end.

What I can do for you

Hire me for the work I actually do every day

No long menu of everything. These are the six things I've done repeatedly on live products, and they are the six things I'll do well for you.

Node.js Backend & REST APIs

Production Express + MongoDB APIs that stay fast when traffic multiplies. Clean structure, request validation, centralised error handling and logging.

  • Express.js / REST & JWT auth
  • MongoDB schema + index design
  • Redis caching & pagination
  • Deployment on Heroku / VPS

Web3 & Solidity Development

Smart contracts and the backend glue around them — token logic, NFTs, RPC redundancy and blockchain event indexing that never silently stops.

  • Solidity smart contracts
  • Generative NFT / raffle systems
  • Multi-RPC failover setups
  • On-chain data indexing

AI Agents & Automation

n8n workflows, LangGraph agents and no-code automation that remove repetitive work — connected straight into your existing tools and data.

  • n8n workflow automation
  • LangGraph / AI agents
  • API + LLM integrations
  • Custom internal tooling

QA, Testing & Bug Fixing

Five years of manual, regression and UI testing. I find the bug, trace the root cause, ship the fix and add monitoring so it never comes back quietly.

  • Manual & regression testing
  • Verification and validation
  • Root-cause debugging
  • Error alerts & monitoring

Performance & Scaling Rescue

Slow queries, timeouts, 100% CPU, random logouts. I have fixed all of them on live products with millions of users — usually without a rewrite.

  • Query & aggregation tuning
  • CPU / memory bottlenecks
  • Session & JWT bugs
  • Zero-downtime releases

iOS Apps with SwiftUI

From idea to App Store. I have designed, built and published my own SwiftUI game, so I know the whole pipeline including review and publishing.

How a project runs

No surprises, no disappearing for a week

Most bad freelance experiences come from silence. Here's exactly what working with me looks like.

01

Scope call

A short call or a detailed message. I tell you honestly whether the job is a fit and what it realistically takes.

02

Plan & fixed milestones

You get a written plan with milestones and delivery dates, so nothing about the timeline is a surprise.

03

Build & daily updates

I ship in small pieces and send progress updates, so you always see where the money is going.

04

Test, deliver, support

QA-tested delivery with docs and handover — plus free support after delivery if something breaks.

About me

A bit about how I work

I'm Muhammad Shahid, from Faisalabad. I got into software through testing, not coding. My first job was as an SQA engineer, breaking other people's software for a living. That's a strange way to start, but it left me with a habit I still have: before I call something done, I try to break it myself.

I moved into backend work in 2022 and have been writing Node.js ever since. Most of my work since 2023 has been on blockchain products at Quecko, which means a lot of late nights around token launches and a lot of debugging things that only misbehave at scale. Slow queries at 300 million users behave nothing like slow queries in staging.

These days I'm building an AI platform at joni.ai, and I spend my own time on n8n workflows, LangGraph agents and the occasional SwiftUI game. I published one on the App Store, mostly to prove to myself that I could take something all the way to release on my own.

If you work with me, expect direct answers. If a deadline isn't realistic I'll say so on day one instead of at the end of the sprint.

Questions

Things clients usually ask first

It depends on the scope. Small fixes and audits work hourly; full builds work better on fixed milestones. Send me the details and you get a clear number back — no vague estimates.

Yes, that is most of my work. I have taken over live products with millions of users and fixed performance, session and payment bugs without rewriting them.

I am in Pakistan (UTC+5) and regularly overlap with US, EU and Gulf clients. I keep the hours that your project actually needs.

Yes. I started as an SQA Engineer before moving into backend, so everything I ship goes out tested — not thrown over the wall.
