8 Strategies to Solve Shape-Fitting Puzzles Faster

By Muhammad Shahid Khan ¡ ¡ 4 min read

Quick answer

Place the largest and most awkward pieces first, fill corners and narrow areas before open space, keep track of area so you never leave a gap no piece can fill, and undo early when a gap becomes impossible. Most silhouette puzzles have several valid solutions, so there is rarely one "right" first move.

Shape-fitting puzzles, including tangrams, polyomino puzzles and silhouette fillers like Magnetic Blocks, all reward the same habits. Here are eight that make the biggest difference, from beginner to expert levels.

I build Magnetic Blocks: Fill & Relax, a free, calm tangram-style puzzle game for iPhone and iPad, and the screenshots here come from it. If you want to try a puzzle as you read, get Magnetic Blocks on the App Store.

1. Place the biggest pieces first

Large pieces have the fewest places they can go. Placing them early cuts down the options for everything else. Small pieces are flexible, so save them to fill the gaps at the end.

2. Fill corners and narrow areas first

Open space can be filled many ways. A narrow strip or a sharp corner can often only be filled one way. Find the most constrained part of the silhouette and solve that first.

Magnetic Blocks puzzle: fill the silhouette with magnetic shapes
Start with the narrowest parts of the silhouette, where only a few pieces could possibly fit.

3. Read the edges

A long straight edge on the silhouette usually matches a long straight edge on a piece. A diagonal edge needs a triangle or a piece with a slanted side. Matching edge types is often faster than trying pieces at random.

4. Count the area

Before you place the last few pieces, compare the size of each gap with the pieces that are left. If you have a gap that is three squares in size and no piece of size three or less, something earlier is wrong.

5. Watch out for dead gaps

A "dead gap" is an isolated hole that no remaining piece can fill: a single cell in a corner, or a shape no piece matches. Every time you place a piece, glance at the spaces around it. Spotting a dead gap immediately saves you from discovering it ten moves later.

6. Rotate in your head before you drag

Experienced players picture the rotation first and then place the piece. In Magnetic Blocks, auto-rotate helps: drag a piece near a gap and it tries the rotation that fits.

Ten difficulty tiers take you from five-piece warm-ups to sixty-four-piece brain teasers.

7. Undo early, not late

If a piece only "nearly" fits, it is wrong. Undo straight away rather than building on a mistake. Undo is free, and you lose less progress the sooner you use it.

8. Remember there is more than one solution

In most Magnetic Blocks puzzles, many arrangements are valid. If you are stuck on one approach, try starting from a completely different corner. Players who loosen their attachment to their first idea solve faster.

How do I go from casual to expert?

  • Play daily. The daily challenge is a short, regular workout.
  • Aim for three stars. Clean, fast clears force you to plan instead of trying pieces at random.
  • Step up a tier once the current one feels easy.
  • Use hints to learn, not to finish. Look at where the hint places a piece and ask why.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best strategy for shape-fitting puzzles?

Place the largest pieces first, fill corners and narrow areas before open space, and check every new gap can still be filled by the pieces you have left.

Should I place big or small pieces first?

Big pieces. They have the fewest possible positions. Small pieces are flexible and best used to fill the final gaps.

What is a dead gap?

An isolated empty space that none of the remaining pieces can fill. It means an earlier placement needs to change.

How do I know when to undo?

As soon as a piece only nearly fits, or you create a gap no remaining piece can fill. Undoing early loses less progress.

Is there only one solution to each Magnetic Blocks puzzle?

No. Most puzzles have many valid solutions, so you can solve them your own way.

How do I earn three stars in Magnetic Blocks?

Three stars are awarded for a clean, fast clear. Planning your moves and avoiding unnecessary undos helps.

What is a polyomino?

A shape made of equal squares joined edge to edge. Dominoes have two squares, trominoes three, tetrominoes four and pentominoes five.

Do hints count against me?

Hints are there to help you learn the puzzle. Use them to understand why a piece goes where it does.

How many difficulty levels does Magnetic Blocks have?

Ten difficulty tiers across 100 chapters, from five-piece warm-ups to sixty-four-piece challenges.

Are shape puzzles good for your brain?

They exercise spatial reasoning, planning and pattern recognition, which is why similar puzzles are used in classrooms.
