How to Use Driving Theory Mock Tests to Pass First Time

By Muhammad Shahid Khan · · 5 min read

Quick answer

Start full mock tests only after you have practised every topic. Take them under real conditions (50 questions, 57 minutes), review every wrong answer, and practise those topics before the next mock. You are ready to book when you score 46 or more out of 50 in several mocks in a row, giving you a margin over the real pass mark of 43.

Mock tests are the best predictor of how you will do on the real theory test, but only if you use them properly. Taking mock after mock until the questions look familiar gives you a false sense of security. Used well, mocks tell you exactly what you still need to learn.

I build RoadTick: Driving Theory Test, a free UK theory test app for iPhone and iPad, and the screenshots in this guide come from it. If you want to practise as you read, get RoadTick on the App Store.

When should I start taking mock tests?

After you have practised every topic at least once. A mock taken in your first week mostly shows you that you have not studied yet, which is not useful information. Start with topic-by-topic practice, where you read the explanation after each answer. Then move to mocks.

RoadTick theory test topics list for focused revision
Practise by topic first. Mocks are for checking readiness, not for learning a topic from scratch.

How should I take a mock test?

As close to the real thing as you can:

  • Use the timer: 50 questions in 57 minutes.
  • No notes, no pausing and no checking answers halfway through.
  • Flag questions you are unsure about and come back to them at the end, as you can in the real test.
  • Sit somewhere quiet and put your phone notifications on silent.

What score means I am ready?

The real pass mark is 43 out of 50. Aim for a margin above that, because real test nerves and unfamiliar wording cost a few marks:

Mock scoreWhat it means
Below 40Go back to topic practice for your weakest topics.
40 to 42Close, but you would probably fail. Focus on weak topics.
43 to 45You would pass, but the margin is thin.
46+ in several mocks in a rowBook the test.

How do I review a mock test?

The review matters more than the score. For every question you got wrong, or guessed:

  1. Read the explanation, not just the correct answer.
  2. Identify the topic, for example stopping distances, motorway rules or vulnerable road users.
  3. Practise that topic before your next mock.
  4. Look for patterns. If several mistakes come from one topic, that topic needs a proper revision session.

Which topics cost the most marks?

  • Stopping distances. Learn the figures: 12 m at 20 mph, 23 m at 30 mph, 36 m at 40 mph, 53 m at 50 mph, 73 m at 60 mph and 96 m at 70 mph, in good conditions. They can be up to twice as long on wet roads and up to ten times as long on icy roads.
  • Motorway rules: lane discipline, hard shoulders and smart motorways.
  • Vulnerable road users, including the 2022 Highway Code hierarchy of road users.
  • Documents and penalties: for example, new drivers lose their licence if they get 6 or more points within 2 years of passing.
  • Road signs that look alike. See UK road signs explained.

What should my final week look like?

  • Days 1 to 5: one timed mock a day, followed by practice on the topics it exposed, plus 10 to 15 minutes of hazard perception.
  • Day 6: light revision of road signs, stopping distances and your bookmarked weak areas.
  • Day 7, test day: no cramming. Bring your provisional licence and arrive early.

Do not forget hazard perception in the final week. It is a separate part with its own pass mark, and you must pass both parts together. See hazard perception test tips.

Frequently asked questions

Are mock theory tests like the real test?

Good mock tests copy the real format: 50 questions in 57 minutes on the same topics. The exact real questions are not published, so no mock can guarantee the same questions.

What mock test score means I am ready?

Aim for 46 or more out of 50 in several mocks in a row. The real pass mark is 43, so this gives you a safety margin.

How many mock tests should I take?

There is no fixed number. Take them until you consistently score well above the pass mark, and review every mistake each time.

When should I start mock tests?

After you have practised every topic at least once. Before that, topic practice is more useful.

Should I time my mock tests?

Yes. Use the real limit of 57 minutes for 50 questions so the time pressure feels familiar on test day.

What are the stopping distances for the theory test?

In good conditions: 12 m at 20 mph, 23 m at 30 mph, 36 m at 40 mph, 53 m at 50 mph, 73 m at 60 mph and 96 m at 70 mph.

Should I practise hazard perception in the last week?

Yes. It is a separate part with its own pass mark of 44 out of 75, and you must pass both parts in the same sitting.

What should I do the day before the theory test?

Light revision of weak areas, signs and stopping distances. Check you have your provisional licence and know where the test centre is.

Can I flag questions in the real theory test?

Yes. You can flag questions and return to them before the time runs out.

Does RoadTick have timed mock tests?

Yes. RoadTick includes timed mock tests that mirror the format of the real theory test.

Does RoadTick explain the answers?

Yes. Every practice question has a clear explanation, so you understand the rule rather than memorise the answer.
