How to Hide Your Caller ID on iPhone (#31#, *67 and Settings)

By Muhammad Shahid Khan · · 4 min read

Quick answer

To hide your number for one call, dial #31# before the number on many GSM networks, or *67 before the number in the US. To hide it for all calls, turn off Show My Caller ID in Settings > Phone, where your carrier offers it. Dial *#31# to check your current setting. Your number is still shown to emergency services.

There are good reasons to hide your number: calling a business you do not want marketing calls from, calling a customer from your personal phone, or keeping your number private when selling something online. Here is how to do it on an iPhone.

I build Secret Codes: IMEI & Carrier, a free iPhone app with 317 verified dial codes, and the screenshots in this guide come from it. If you would rather tap than memorise codes, get Secret Codes on the App Store.

How do I hide my number for one call?

On GSM networks (UK, Europe, Middle East, South Asia and more)

Dial #31# followed by the number, for example #31#07700900123, and press Call. The person you call sees "No Caller ID", "Private" or "Unknown".

In the US

Dial *67 followed by the number, for example *672125550123. This works on the major US carriers.

How do I hide my number for every call?

On carriers that support it, go to Settings > Phone > Show My Caller ID (on recent iOS versions, Settings > Apps > Phone) and turn it off. If you do not see the option, or it is greyed out, your carrier controls it. Contact them, or use a code per call.

Secret Codes categories: carrier, call forwarding, caller ID, SIM and more
The Caller ID category covers hiding or showing your number per call, plus CLIR and CLIP status checks.

How do I check whether my number is hidden?

Dial *#31#. Your network replies with whether caller ID restriction (CLIR) is active on your line. You can also dial *#30# to check whether you can see other people's numbers when they call you (CLIP).

How do I show my number on one call when it is hidden by default?

On many GSM networks, dial *31# before the number to show your caller ID for that call only. In the US, *82 before the number does the same on the major carriers.

When will hiding my number not work?

  • Emergency services always see your number and location.
  • Toll-free numbers in the US can often still see the calling number.
  • Some people block private calls. Their phone may reject the call, or send it straight to voicemail.
  • Your carrier may not support the code, or may override it.
  • Messages and iMessage always show your number or Apple Account.

Hiding your number for privacy is legal in most countries. Pretending to be someone else, called spoofing, is a different thing, and using it to deceive or defraud people is illegal in many places.
