Discount calculator
Find the sale price and how much you save, including double discounts and sales tax.
Quick answer
To find a sale price, multiply the original price by (1 − discount ÷ 100): 25% off 80 is 80 × 0.75 = 60, a saving of 20. Enter the price and discount here to see the result. Add a second discount, and it applies to the already reduced price, so 20% then 10% off is 28%, not 30%. You can also add sales tax and quantity.
How to use it
- Enter the price and discount. The result appears as soon as both are filled in.
- Add the extras. Optionally add a second discount, sales tax and quantity.
- Read the results. See what you pay, what you save and the effective discount.
Example
Two items at 100 each, with 20% off, then 10% off, then 5% tax:
Input
Price: 100, Quantity: 2
Discount: 20%, Extra: 10%, Tax: 5%Output
Price after discount: 144.00
You save: 56.00 (28%)
Tax: 7.20
You pay: 151.20Common errors and how to fix them
Adding two discounts gave the wrong price- Stacked discounts multiply rather than add. Use the "Extra discount" field for the second one.
Check the numbers- Discounts must be between 0 and 100%, and prices cannot be negative.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the price by the percentage and divide by 100 to get the saving, then subtract it. For 30% off 50: 50 × 30 ÷ 100 = 15, so you pay 35.
Is 20% off then 10% off the same as 30% off?
No. The second discount applies to the reduced price, so the total is 28%. On a price of 100 you pay 72, not 70.
Does the order of two discounts matter?
No. 10% then 20% gives the same final price as 20% then 10%.
Is tax charged before or after the discount?
Usually on the discounted price, which is how this calculator works. Coupons from a manufacturer can be treated differently in some places.
How do I find the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). If 75 is the price after 25% off, the original was 75 ÷ 0.75 = 100.
How do I find the percentage off?
Divide the saving by the original price and multiply by 100. The percentage calculator can do this for you too.
Is a percentage discount better than money off?
Compare them on your actual total: 20% off beats 10 off when you spend more than 50.
Which currencies does it work with?
Any. Enter plain numbers; the calculation is the same in every currency.
How do I work out what percentage I saved?
The tool shows it as "Effective discount". For other percentage questions, use the percentage calculator.
Can I add VAT or GST to the discounted price?
Yes, enter the rate in the tax field. To add or remove tax on its own, use the GST calculator.
