Frequently asked questions
Can this crack a PDF if I forgot the password?
No. It needs the correct password, as it uses it to decrypt the file. Good encryption has no shortcut.
Why remove a password at all?
To avoid typing it each time, to merge or edit the file, or to store it in a system that cannot read protected PDFs, such as a bank statement in your own records.
Is it legal to unlock a PDF?
Generally, if it is your own file or you have the right to use it without protection. Do not remove protection from documents you have no right to.
Is my password stored?
No. It is used in your browser for this one file and is gone when you leave the page.
Is the original file changed?
No. You get a new copy, and the protected original remains as it is.
Are my pages or quality changed?
No. The content is decrypted and saved again, with nothing re-rendered.
What about PDFs that open but will not print or copy?
Those have only permission limits. Some can be saved as unrestricted here if you have the right to do so, leaving the password box empty.
Why does it say the password is wrong?
Passwords are case-sensitive, and a space copied by accident counts. Bank PDFs often use a pattern, such as part of your name and date of birth, explained in the email.
What can I do with the file after unlocking it?
Anything your other tools can do with a normal PDF, such as Merge PDF or Split PDF, without being asked for a password.
Should I keep the unlocked copy?
Only somewhere safe, because anyone can now open it. To protect it again, use Protect PDF.
