PDF to Word converter
Turn the text of a PDF into an editable Word document, without uploading your file.
Best for documents you want to edit: it keeps the text, headings, paragraphs and page breaks. Images, tables and exact layout are not carried over.
Quick answer
Choose a PDF and press Convert to download a .docx you can edit in Word, Google Docs or Pages. It keeps the text, headings, paragraphs and page breaks, but not images, tables or the exact layout, so it suits text documents such as reports and contracts best. A scanned PDF has no real text and needs OCR first.
How to use it
- Choose a PDF. A text-based PDF works best.
- Press Convert to Word. Each page is read in your browser.
- Download and edit. Open the .docx in Word, Google Docs or Pages and check the result.
Example
A text-based report becomes an editable document:
Input
report.pdf
A large title, then body text across 5 pagesOutput
report.docx
The title becomes a Heading 1, the text becomes paragraphs, and each PDF page starts a new page.Common errors and how to fix them
No text was found in this PDF- It is a scan or a picture. Run OCR first, then convert.
Words are out of order- Complex layouts with columns or tables confuse the reading order. Copy the affected sections by hand.
Frequently asked questions
Will my formatting be kept?
The text structure is kept: headings, paragraphs and page breaks. Images, tables, columns, fonts and exact positions are not. This is a text extraction rather than a page-perfect copy.
Why was no text found?
Your PDF is probably a scan, meaning each page is a picture of text. It needs OCR (text recognition) first. On iPhone, the Picture to Text and SnapText apps can extract the text from a photo.
How can I tell whether my PDF is a scan?
Open it and try to select a word. If you can't highlight individual words, it is a scan.
Is my document uploaded?
No. The file is processed by your own browser and never leaves your device, so it is safe for private documents.
Can I convert a PDF with multiple columns?
It will work, but the lines may run together across columns because the reading order is guessed from position. Check the result.
Does it work with Urdu, Arabic or Chinese?
Text is extracted if the PDF stores it properly. Right-to-left text may come out in the wrong order, depending on how the PDF was made.
Can I convert it in Word itself?
Yes. Recent desktop versions of Word can open a PDF and convert it, with more layout kept, but you need Word, and it works best on simple documents.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF?
Remove the password first with the Unlock PDF tool, using the password you already know.
Can I edit a PDF without converting it?
Only small changes, and only in a PDF editor. For real rewriting, converting to Word is easier, and you can turn it back with Word to PDF.
Why do line breaks look wrong in the Word file?
PDFs store lines rather than paragraphs, so the tool joins lines by their position and sometimes gets it wrong. Fix those by hand, or clean pasted text with the remove extra spaces tool.
