Frequently asked questions

How do I find the HEX code of a colour in an image?

Choose the image here and click the colour. The HEX code appears with a Copy button.

What is the difference between HEX, RGB and HSL?

They describe the same colour differently. HEX is the short form used in web code, RGB gives red, green and blue from 0 to 255, and HSL gives hue, saturation and lightness, which is easier to adjust.

Why does the same colour give slightly different codes?

Photos and JPGs vary pixel by pixel because of lighting and compression. Click a few spots or use the palette for an average.

How is the palette made?

Similar pixels are grouped, and the eight biggest groups are shown, each as their average colour.

How do I pick a colour from a website?

Take a screenshot and open it here. Avoid resizing it first, which blends the colours.

Are the colours accurate?

They are the values stored in the file, as your browser reads it. Wide-gamut photos may be converted to standard sRGB colours.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. Tap the image to pick the colour.

Is my image uploaded?

No. It is read in your browser.

How do I convert a colour code to another format?

All three formats appear here. To type in a code you already have and check its contrast, use the color converter.

Can I use the picked colour in a favicon?

Yes. Copy the HEX code and enter it in the favicon generator as a text or background colour.
